Tim Burton's Corpse Bride - Trailer A

Bryn says: Sometimes films come out that are so different and fresh that you can't help but feel the energy through the trailer/promotional materials. Fight Club is a trailer that springs to mind. So when they get such a film and couple it with such a strong trailer the result is quite striking. From the very start this of trailer it's clear that we are being taken into a new 'world', even the studio (Warner Bros) logo is shown as being blended into this world by having it as the door knocker as we move into the church. I loved the Nightmare Before Christmas and enjoyed the teaser for this film a couple of months ago. But this trailer has really gotten me excited. They skillfully bring viewers into this dark, twisted piece by having one of the musical numbers from 'Nightmare' playing in the background. The familiar track will probably put them in mind of what it is this film is trying to do. I really cannot believe that they would have this trailer be so deliberately dark. I know that the piece itself is very dark and not very 'Happy Meal' friendly but I really thought that WB might try and lighten things up. It's clear however that this trailer knows it audience and for that I'm a very happy camper. The real stand out line for me is "Can a heart still break once it's stopped beating?" Such a line would set the various gears and levers in my mind ticking over if this were a drama, but having it in a stop motion animation? This is really something that I don't think I've ever seen before. The comedy points work well for me and as if proof is needed.. two words.. dancing skeletons. Will this trailer make this film a hit? Probably not. But if this film was every going to get it's 'message' out there then this trailer does a remarkable job. It's different and that's not a bad thing in this market place. Score: 18 out of 20

I just wanted to point out that "The Nightmare Before Christmas" IS a musical.

Man Alive. I can't believe that people are still sore about that Rent TRAILER. Well OK. For the sake of fairness I looked into the whole thing.. and the definition of a musical is... "A play or movie that contains musical numbers." So by that standard Be Cool (2005 Travolta movie) was also a musical. Though correct, when people (and myself) refer to musicals they refer to the grandiose, theatrical nature of them. For example, The Lion King, it spawned a musical. But the actual original piece itself (the animation) is seen as being a film with musical numbers rather than an actual musical. So in short, yes and no. Apples and oranges, but I'll concede you point.
PS - Apparently Apple.com has a 'revised' version of the Rent TRAILER online...hmmm, dare I stir up that hornets nest again....

I'm not trying to be nit-picky, i just hate absolute judgments on genres. In all genres there are good and bad... and fair enough to say you don't like that genre... I myself don't like horror films, but I love "The Shining." Though I think there is plenty of room to debate whether that film is actually a horror or psychological thriller. Anyway I digress. I disagree that "Be Cool" is a musical and that "The Lion King" (theatrical release) is not a musical for this reason... A musical by nature is not a film, stage show, or whatever with music thrown into it... but rather a piece with musical interludes that push the story forward. So as in "The Nightmare Before Christmas" or "The Lion King" evey musical number either expounds some backstory, or reveals the emotional state of the character, or even just recapitulates the events of the story so far in service of the story. In "Be Cool" the musical numbers were insipid, shallow sequences inserted to show of the budget of the film.

I have a feeling that we could be doing this until the end of time or until at least the alien tripods land/emerge. Let's agree to disagree. Or agree(I have a creeping suspicion that you were winning that debate. Let's find some common ground... Bugsy Malone. Guns that fire cream pies. How can you hate that? A musical I love. And I still love it even though it has Scott Baio in it. Surely that's something? But in saying that... I appreciate the posts all the same. A well structured argument in 'talkbacks' is rare.

What did i say? All you yakkity bitches have been informed that you are owned. And as such, no longer talk about musicals. At all. None. And i think that this guy should review Rent again and this time give it no stars. Just do what you do best... talk about titties in trailers.
I have spoken.
